The year was 1898, the U.S. was the greatest nation on earth. Then, just a couple of weeks later, the world turned. In August, a young man, James Laughlin, was shot dead while sitting at a railroad crossing in Philadelphia. The bullet, fired from an automatic pistol, struck him in the head and killed him instantly.
James Laughlin was actually killed by a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was sitting on his train when two men stopped and ordered him off the car. He tried to get away, but one of the bandits fired a shot, hitting him in the back. The shock of the pain and the fear of the unknown caused Laughlin to drop his gun and reach for the train door.
A few years ago I was a guest on an internet radio show about guns. I happened to mention that I was a big fan of James Laughlin and his work, and that I wanted to tell you guys something about him. The hosts of the show asked me to do a few things: tell you what happened to him, what he did to change his appearance, how he died, and how the story changed a few years ago.
